While fashion seems to change dramatically in some respects, in many ways it is a rotating circle and many of the trends of the past decades are coming back into style. There is no exception in this decade. The only thing that may be a little different is that the fashion trends of this decade seem to be borrowed from many previous decades, not just one. We are seeing trends that date back to the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s but with a modern twist. Classic styles are still all the rage, and adding trendy accessories will make the look your own.

1960s trends

Some of the most notable trends from the swinging 1960s, a time of self-expression, rebellion and freedom, were miniskirts, boho styles, bright colors, bold print and of course big hair. It was in stark contrast to the very conservative 1950s. Some trends show up in cat-eye eyeliner and false eyelashes — like the ones worn by Adele. Pastel hair colors, bright makeup, floral crowns and short tight skirts are the throwback fashion trends that were part of the fashion scene of the 1920s. Don’t forget about the crop tops and bandanas that are the rage this decade, too! Wedge heels, round sunglasses and large earrings are all the accessories you need to round off your retro look.

1970s trends

Carrying over from the 1960s, the flower-power, hippie, boho fashion continued into the 1970s and beyond. These trends are also showing up in fashion today. Plenty of statement jewelry, peasant tops, maxi dresses, lace-up sandals, ruffles — boho-chic fashion trends have become relevant again. Hippie patchwork, vests, beads, bell-bottoms and peace signs are back in fashion. Many of the latest music stars wear gypsy skirts, ruffled tops, cowboy boots, fringed jackets and skirts, wide-brimmed hats, and suede boots, to name just a few items. These are all 1970s retro fashion items that have made a comeback. For a more modern twist, choose just one or two retro items to blend in with your more modern choices. Or wear your usual style and make it boho by adding a fringed handbag and leather jacket. There are so many items to choose from to make your outfit more 70s. Don’t forget the exaggerated jewelry and headpieces and stack up your rings. Bonus points for vintage “silver” jewelers. Other trends include fur, platform ankle boots, motorcycle leathers, crochet garments, lace, tassels, studs, floral and animal print, and afro hairstyles.

1980s trends

The 1980s were a time of experimenting with fashion. Some of the trends included: big hair (teased or permed), neon colors, bold makeup, block heels, shoulder pads, leggings worn as pants, ripped jeans, fake fur, jumpsuits, sequins and all things shiny. Ankle socks, short pleated skirts and jeans were popular in the 1980s and are still worn today. Even the shoulder pads are back, although a little less pronounced than in the 1980s. While you dont have to be as bright and bold as in the 1980s fashion, you can still spice up a simple outfit with a sequin top, motorcycle boots or a gorgeous leather mini skirt.

1990 trends

The 1990s were the era of minimalism and understatement. Grunge was in and bright and bold was out. Big hair gave way to slick partings, braids and buns. Plaid, chokers, Dr. Martens boots and over-the-knee-socks were the fashions of the time. Darker, more muted colors were popular. The gothic look was back, with ripped tights, mesh tops and platform shoes. Chokers, punk hairstyles as well as weird hair colors are trends from the 1990s that made a comeback in this decade. Temporary tattoos, dark or red lips with more neutral makeup are also one of the styles that are back in popularity.

No matter what you wear, be it modern or retro, make your style your own. Fashion trends come and go but your style can always be trendy. Add amazing accessories to your wardrobe and mix up your outfits today. The 2020s are an eclectic mix of many eras, so why choose just one?
