Lavender is often used as a moth repellent, but it is also great for aromatherapy. It is a native plant for dry Mediterranean lands and it smells just divine! Have you ever thought what healing uses this beautiful plant may have?

Aromatherapy

The lavender essential oil is commonly used in aromatherapy — not only because of the beautiful smell it offers, but also due to the fact that it allows you to feel better. It is believed to be a good remedy for notorious anxiety and therapy supporting the treatment of depression. Thus, if you don’t feel very well lately, sprinkle a few drops of lavender essential oil on the logs burning in your fireplace.

Common anxiety

More and more people admit that they experience chronic anxiety. Lavender is known for its calming effect, due to which it is also sometimes used in children’s cosmetics. The essential oil added to a bubble bath is supposed to make them calmer and help with falling asleep. Children, especially toddlers, have trouble sleeping sometimes and lavender is known for helping with healthy sleep.

Antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effect

The lavender oil is also known for a fairly strong antiseptic and anti-inflammatory potential, which might help with mild skin irritations, such as scratches, minor burns or bug bites. Remember that if you would like to use lavender oil, you need to mix it with something that has a moisturizing effect, like an olive oil. Alone, the essential oil might cause allergic reactions.

Good for your mood

Lavender provides a lot of benefits for your physical, mental and emotional health. If you feel down, you should definitely take a bath with addition of a few drops of lavender essential oil or perform the aromatherapy procedure using equipment intended for this purpose. Just keep in mind that it may make you sleepier than usual. Thus, better try the therapy with lavender aroma in the evening, when you can just lay down in bed and rest.

Skin and hair care

While lavender may have different effects on different people, some of its users managed to prevent hair loss by using lavender oil in combination with other types of oils. The lavender essential oil is especially beneficial for alopecia aerata, and it can even make hair grow back!

Side effects

Even though lavender is widely used, it has potential side effects and contraindications that are not common but can still occur. When used internally, the lavender oil can cause nausea and vomiting. Also, in some cases, the lavender essential oil tends to cause skin irritation and allergies. If you suffer from any itching, vomiting, abdominal pain, malaise or skin problems and you suspect that it is related to the use of lavender oil, stop using it immediately and contact your doctor as soon as possible.
